Bug Fixes

  • Creative Commons-licensed content appearing in the user’s “My Content” tab has been moved to the “Shared Content” tab (detailed below).

Features

  • Shared Content. An additional “Shared Content” tab has been added to the EdLib Content Explorer which displays resources with a Creative Commons license. From within this tab it is possible to preview resources and subsequently copy resources across into the user’s “My Content” tab for the purpose of reuse in the user’s own courses. Editing a copied resource will result in a versioning fork. Furthermore, the copied resource maintains the license of the original resource. As a prerequisite for “Shared Content” feature, in the previous release, the ability to choose and set a (Creative Commons) license for a given resource was added to the Content Author. Once a license has been set for a resource, said resource will appear in both the “Shared Content” and “My Content” for the owner of the resource. At this stage, only the owner of a resource is able to set or change the resource’s license.

Improvements

  • An “access” filter has been added to the “My Content” tab to show content that the user owns or content that the user collaborates on or both (which is the default).

Known Issues

  • After copying a resource from the “Shared Content” tab the user is able to change the license of the resource. Currently, EdStep/EdLib does not have the necessary license checking logic in place to prevent incompatible changes to the license (with respect to the original resource’s license). This issue will be addressed in a future release.
  • Once a license has been set for a resource, it can take up to one minute before the license becomes visible in both the “Shared Content” tab and when previewing the resource.

EdStep 16.11.4 Release Notes

Bug Fixes

  • Several bugs have been fixed with regards to language switching within the EdLib platform (specifically, the Content Author). That is, it is already possible to switch language with appropriate translations within the EdStep application. We have now focused our attention on the EdLib platform (that is, the Content Explorer and Content Author) to ensure that language switching works correctly there, as well.
  • An edge-case that prevented new users from creating courses (the so-called “/mycourses” bug) has been fixed.

Features

  • Duplicate course. It’s now possible to create a copy of an existing course. What’s more, if the resources in either the original course or the new (copied) course are edited they will become independent resources forked from the original resource.
  • It is now possible to attach (primarily, Creative Commons) licenses to resources. This feature is the forerunner of a larger feature (to be released soon) called the “Shared Content” tab where users will be able to find and reuse content that has been licensed with a Creative Commons license.

Improvements

  • As mentioned in the previous release notes, the Copy Activity feature did not allow copying activities into modules in the current course (including the same module). This limitation has now been removed.
  • Functionality to add a minimum required score to an activity has been added.
  • Several error messages and warnings have been improved and made more descriptive to avoid confusion with users.
  • Miscellaneous minor visual fixes have been made to the EdStep footer and header.
  • The sending of an email to inform about sharing of resources are now sent from the appropriate (edlib.com) domain.
  • A user is now automatically logged-out of the application if they decline the EdStep Terms and Conditions.
  • The edit lock is now also released when closing the EdLib window. Before, a user had to explicitly click on the “Save and Close” button for the edit lock to be released. Not doing so could cause an unintentional lock on a resource to be maintained.

Known Issues

EdStep Release Notes, November 24, 2016

Bug Fixes

  • An intermittent “Whoops, looks like something went wrong” bug (with an HTTP 500 status code) in the Content Author has been fixed.
  • Miscellaneous encoding-related bugs have been fixed one of which prevented a user from logging in if their username contained national characters like, for example, “å”, “ø”, or “æ”.

Features

  • It’s now possible to copy activities to other modules. You do so by clicking on the activity’s “Copy” button which will then display a module selector dialog to choose which module you want to copy the activity in to. Editing the activity’s resource will result in the creation of separate versioned resources (one for each activity).

Improvements

  • Before, it was possible for two (or more) users to simultaneously edit the same resource with the consequence that the user who saved last would overwrite changes made by the other user(s). “Edit locking” prevents this scenario from happening by not allowing more than one user to be editing a resource at any given time. A message informing that the resource is locked will be displayed to the user who attempts to edit a resource that is currently already being edited by another user. The lock is either released by the first user saving and closing the resource editor or after an hour has elapsed (whichever condition is met first).
  • EdStep is approaching its official “version 1.0” release meaning that from this release and onward our users will have to explicitly accept EdStep’s Terms and Conditions if they want to (continue to) use EdStep.

Known Issues

  • Currently, the Copy Activity feature does not allow copying activities into modules in the current course (including the same module). This limitation will be removed, shortly.
  • The edit lock will not be released if the user clicks on the EdLib’s window “Close [X]” button. That is, to release the edit lock, the user must click on the “Close and Save” button. This limitation will be removed, shortly.

EdStep Release Notes, November 03, 2016

Today’s release is an “under the hood” release and includes hardly any user-facing fixes and functionality.

EdStep Release Notes, October 27, 2016

Bug Fixes

  • The bug causing the footer in EdStep to not be visible in Safari has been fixed.
  • The bug causing first-time Safari users to have problems with the Content Explorer has been fixed. This was reported as an issue in a previous release of EdStep.

Features

  • No new user-facing features were included in this release.

Improvements

  • The logic surrounding the publication of courses has been tightened. Previously, it was possible to make changes (of any kind) to an already-published course. With this improvement, EdStep will check if a course has enrolled learners with registered results and/or views and “lock” the course, accordingly. If a course collaborator wants to make changes to a course in this state, she will have to first “unpublish” (or retract) the course before being able to make changes. The consequence of unpublishing a course will be that enrolled learners will not be able to (continue to) take the course until the course is republished. The existing course results (for enrolled learners) will not be reset.

Known Issues

  • No known issues specifically related to this release.

EdStep Release Notes, October 20, 2016

Bug Fixes

  • The different H5P filters in the Content Explorer were not provided until content of that type had been displayed. This bug is now fixed: all of the H5P type filters are immediately available.
  • If a resource had previously been shared with collaborators, the subsequent unsharing of that resource to remove access to the resource did not work. This bug has now been fixed.

Features

  • No new features where made available in this release.

Improvements

  • Removed two H5P content types, namely: Twitter Feed and Article. The Twitter Feed type was rarely, if ever, used. The very limited Article type has been deprecated in favour of the new HTML Article type.
  • The “Content Library” tab has been renamed to “My Content”. All content is private by default and has to be explicitly shared with other people for the purpose of collaboration (on the resource).

Known Issues

  • First time users could experience problems with the Content Explorer if they are using Safari.

EdStep Release Notes, October 14, 2016

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed the empty course bug. Before, it was possible to publish a course with no modules or a course with modules without activities. EdStep will now prevent this behavior.
  • Fixed the null labels bug. The previous release made it possible to sign up without providing a user name. The absence of the username caused certain fields in the application where it expected a user name to display “null”.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the selection of course collaborators to not work properly.
  • Fixed the “Try EdStep” link on EdStep’s landing page to use the new sign-up flow (which was part of the previous release).
  • Fixed the bug that caused access to be denied to a user’s resource if they had created said resource while still having an unverified email.
  • Fixed the bug that prompted the user to verify their email on every page refresh even after they had verified their email if they hadn’t logged out and back in to the application.

Features

  • No new features in this release.

Improvements

  • Up to a 50% increase in performance when retrieving resources to display in the Content Explorer.
  • Added visible “drop zones” when dragging an image into the application for the purpose of uploading it.

Known Issues

  • After a failed login attempt (incorrect username and/or password), the “Forgot password?” and “Create new account” links will not be visible (due to the validation message pushing them outside the dialog).
  • If a course administrator changes the authentication requirements from not required to required, already enrolled learners will see the course in their list of courses, but will not be able to access the course because of not having an invitation (to the course).
  • Module score incorrectly set to 100% even if an H5P activity in the module is not completed.

EdStep “Autumn” Release

We’re happy to announce that a new release of EdStep has been made available. This release includes several major features and improvements –both visible and under the hood– that allow us to transition EdStep (the application) and EdLib (the platform on which EdStep is built) into a much more powerful combination. In that respect, we are looking forward to releasing the combined EdStep and EdLib road map, as soon as possible.

With regards to this release, the highlights are provided below. A follow-up post will provide a more in-depth overview of the new EdStep/EdLib improvements on a feature-by-feature basis.

Bug Fixes

  • Miscellaneous encoding-related fixes for both resources and user profiles. Specifically, the encoding-related issue for resources manifested itself by a resource becoming unavailable to the user if the resource’s title included non-ASCII characters.
  • Twitter sign-in bug has been fixed. Previously, an HTTP 500 error was displayed when attempting to log in with a Twitter account.
  • Fixed H5P content not resizing bug.
  • Fixed a user identifier-related bug causing subsequent attempts to access a resource to fail. For example, a user would create a resource after which she would be presented with an “Access Denied” message when subsequently attempting to edit the resource.
  • Fixed image editing for both H5P Course Presentation and Article content types.
  • Miscellaneous fixes related to the filtering of H5P content in the Content Explorer.
  • Fixed a bug that caused a mismatch between the selected filters and the corresponding resources displayed in the Content Explorer.
  • Fixed a bug that enabled the “Show More” button even when there were no more items available in the Content Explorer.
  • Fixed a bug that caused a resource selected from an external provider (in the “Find New Content” tab) to fail to load.
  • Fixed the incorrect sorting of modules.
  • Miscellaneous fixes related to image uploading (including, for example, multiple upload dialog boxes to appear when adding modules to a course).
  • Fixed a bug that prevented newly added external (LTI) providers to be visible to other users.
  • And many more user-facing and back-end issues that have been fixed over the course of the last three months.

New Features

  • The Content Author includes a new advanced (HTML) article type and accompanying (CKEditor-based) WYSIWYG visual editor.
    • The advanced article editor has access to EdLib resources by means of the EdLib plugin button which brings up the EdLib Content Explorer. Using the Content Explorer within the advanced article editor allows the user to find and re-use (by embedding) resources directly into the article.
  • The ability to set a (Creative Commons) license on a resource and the subsequent filtering by license type in the Content Explorer.
  • EdStep as both an LTI provider and consumer (for modules), meaning that EdStep modules can be made available at the platform level (within the Content Explorer) for re-use by other users.

Improvements

  • A simplified sign-up flow
    • Users do not have to provide a display name as part of the sign-up flow.
    • Users do not have to verify their email address as part of the sign-up flow. Nonetheless, certain features will potentially not be available to users until they have verified their email address.
    • Application-specific sign-up emails. Before, when signing up for EdStep, the user would receive a more generic sign-up message from Cerpus Course (without any mention of the originating application) potentially causing confusion as to what application it was referring to.
  • EdLib plugin
    • Content Explorer
      • Revamped tagging interface with auto-complete capabilities for existing tags.
      • Full-text search on resource titles.
      • Improved filtering capabilities and accompanying interface.
      • Loading-on-demand allowing the Content Explorer to more effectively handle a large volume of content.
      • Responsive design allowing for the Content Explorer to render appropriately according to the available screen estate.
    • Content Author
      • A dramatically improved content type selector.
  • Re-designed application layout (including menus, header and footer).
  • Course editor UI improvements.
  • Removed the EdStep beta message repeatedly showing even after the first login.
  • Added the EdStep favicon 🙂

EdStep Release Notes, June 14, 2016

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a character encoding-related bug in the Profile page that caused the incorrect saving of names with, for example, Norwegian-specific characters (that is, æ, ø, and å).
  • Fixed a minor layout issue which caused the menu to be broken on the EdStep landing page in Safari.
  • Fixed the incorrect saving of results when previewing a (H5P) resource.

Features

  • Reordering of activities across modules. That is, it is now possible to move activities from one module to another (using the the already-existing drag-and-drop activity reordering feature).

Improvements

  • No empty activities on the cancellation of the activity creation process. That is to say, before when cancelling the activity creation process (that is, authoring a new resource or selecting an already existing resource) an empty activity would be created and inserted into the module; this behavior has now been changed to ensure that an empty activity is not inserted into the module on cancellation.
  • H5P has been fixed to not (incorrectly) maintain the state of user interactions.
  • The email address is maintained on a failed sign-in or sign-up attempt in the authentication dialog.
  • A full English translation has been provided for the EdStep landing page.

  • Admin (back-end) user interface to manage the availability of resources making it possible to remove, for example, test resources within the Content Explorer making for a much better overall user experience when using the Content Explorer.

  • Sign-up flow cleanup
    1. Removed the username field. The signup flow has been dramatically simplified to ensure that the platform (not just EdStep) provides an optimal initial experience. First impressions really do count.
  • Language support has been extended to the Content Explorer.
